Trees4Future: Gaining greater efficiency by sharing databases and expertise

The project Trees4Future is integrating European know­ledge and expertise on forest genetics, forestry and wood technology. The 28 expert orga­nisations participating in the project are currently working on a platform for sharing information. Metla and the European Forest Institute are the Finnish project partners.

Forestry in Slovakia

On a European scale, Slovakia has reasonable forest resources. Forest accounts for 41 per cent, approximately 20,000 km², of Slovakia’s total land area of 49,000 km². Its total volume of the growing stock under bark was about one sixth of that of Finland, 462 million cubic metres (239 cubic metres per hectare). The Central and Eastern Europe Forest Information Service gathers baseline information on the Slovakian forest sector.

What is IUFRO?

The IUFRO, the International Union of Forest Research Organisations, is one of the oldest scientific organisations in the world. Traditionally Finns have played an active role in the IUFRO. Currently Tuija Sievänen represents Finland on the IUFRO board and acts as a coordinator of division 6, ‘Social Aspects of Forests and Forestry’. The scientific divisions and their units form a permanent structure within the IUFRO organisation. Several Finnish forest researchers currently serve as chairs and deputy chairs of the various units. In addition to these, the IUFRO carries several special programmes, such as the GFIS (Global Forest Information System).

MULTIEFFORT – a step towards improving forest ecosystem services in Karelia

People living in the Karelia region on both sides of the Finnish-Russian border greatly depend on forest and forest ecosystem services. Despite this, the role forest ecosystem services play in the livelihoods of people and their business opportunities has not been fully recognised. Launched in October 2012, MULTIEFFORT cooperation between Finland and Russia aims to address this issue.
