Forskningsprogrammen är aktuella, mångvetenskapliga, tidsbundna helheter som koncentrerar sig på större orsakssammanhang. I forskningsprogrammen ingår i allmänhet 10-20 forskningsprojekt. Forskningsprogrammen är resultatsenheter, programkoordinatorerna svarar för deras ledning.
