One of the fourteen measures of the METSO Programme is monitoring the ecological, economic and social impacts of the programme. Monitoring produces information on the practical implementation of the programme, as well as its impacts on local and national levels. The main responsibility for carrying out the monitoring lies with Metla and the Finnish Environment Institute, under the direction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of the Environment. Various parties are collaborating extensively on the programme.
Implementation of the monitoring requires up-to-date information on the METSO habitats, on the workability and effects of the measures, views of the various players, and the development needs of the programme. From the beginning of 2009, METSO research projects were launched at Metla implementing the practical monitoring and carrying out supporting research. In addition, a wealth of information on the subject area is produced through Metla's other research. New studies are launched flexibly, in accordance with the requirements of METSO monitoring.
