The Natural Resources Institute Finland brings together natural resources research in Finland

The Natural Resources Institute Finland, which is commencing operations at the start of the year, will bring together uniquely strong and cross-discipline expertise in forest, agriculture and food industries, and game and fisheries in Finland. The corporate data held by the merging agencies are an enormous resource that open new avenues for research.

The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) comprises the state research institutes MTT Agrifood Research Finland, the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla), the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute, and the statistical services of the Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The task of the new research and expert organisation is to promote competitive business activities based on the sustainable use of renewable natural resources, well-being, and the vitality of rural areas. The Natural Resources Institute Finland supports social decision-making and produces statistics related to food and renewable natural resources. Furthermore, the research institute handles tasks related to ensuring the genetic diversity of cultivated crops, livestock and forest trees.

Luke aggregates expertise in top research

The goal of the Natural Resources Institute Finland is to reinforce research and expertise in food and renewable natural resources that will be needed in building the bioeconomy of the future and the well-being based on it.

Mari Walls, President and CEO of Luke from the start of the year, praises the strong customer accounts of the institutes that are being merged. When they are merged, something new can be achieved.

– Luke brings together top research and concentrates on creating new types of partnerships, particularly in the forest and food sector. The institutes' own, historical corporate data sets are also an enormous resource, and efficient use must be made of them.

Visible social agent

Mari Walls wants the new research institute to play a visible role in social and international discourse.

– Together with our customers, we want to build an internationally visible Natural Resources Institute Finland that is an active player in the field of the sustainable use of natural resources and bioeconomy solutions.

Developing bioeconomy solutions that have an impact requires open discourse between different agents.

– Luke’s logo is fresh and modern, inviting discourse. Through our research competence, we want to be prominently involved in the creation of sustainable growth and well-being from natural resources.

Luke is an exceptionally cross-disciplinary research institute, aggregating broad expertise and research competence to support the sustainable use of natural resources. The Natural Resources Institute Finland operates in almost 40 localities in Finland, at a total of 53 locations. At the start of 2015, Luke will have 1,700 employees.
