Research Director Leena Paavilainen named as interim director general of Metla as of 1 November 2013

Director General Hannu Raitio will take a leave of absence from his post as director general of Metla in order to take over the duties of project manager for the establishment project of the Natural Resources Institute Finland between 1 November 2012 and 30 October 2014. Leena Paavilainen will assume the duties of director general during the leave of absence. In accordance with the Government's decision-in-principle, the post of director general will move to Joensuu on 1 January 2014.

The Natural Resources Institute Finland will begin operations on 1 January 2015. The Finnish Forest Research Institute Metla, MTT Agrifood Research Finland, the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute and the statistics department of Tike, the Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, will merge to form the Natural Resources Institute Finland, which will become Finland's second-largest research institute. The establishment of the Natural Resources Institute reinforces research and creates the unique, multi-discipline knowledge centre necessary for building the bioeconomy of the future. The Natural Resources Institute will operate in a customer-oriented manner, producing product and service solutions based on knowledge and competence. The merger will also bring about operational efficiency, facilitating the maintenance and development of research infrastructures and enhancing the utilisation and refining of data reserves, monitoring and statistics.
