Leena Paavilainen appointed as Research Director of Metla
The Management Board of the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) has nominated on 21st December 2005 Dr. Leena Paavilainen as a Research Director for a fixed term of five years starting 1st February 2006. This second Research Director position is oriented towards the economically and socially sustainable use of forests.
Both Research Directors are members of the Management Team and report to the Director General. They direct, control and develop the units under their responsibility and are in charge of acquiring external funding. They participate also in the planning, implementation and development of Metla's strategy, organization and activities.
Leena Paavilainen has held leadership positions both in wood product and paper sector and in various research programmes. Currently she is in charge of planning a wood materials programme under the EU-project "WoodWisdom-net". She has headed several international development projects and has wide national and international networks. She has strong expertise in forest based entrepreneurship and business activity and in the societal importance of forests.
Jari Varjo appointed as the Director of the Vantaa Research Unit of Metla
The Management Board of the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) has appointed on 21st December 2005 Dr. Jari Varjo as the Director of Vantaa Research Unit starting 1st of January 2006. The Vantaa Unit is the largest regional unit of Metla and has a staff of over 350. The research in the unit is oriented to biological, technical, social and economical sciences and to biotechnology and tree breeding.
Jari Varjo joined Metla as a researcher in 1996. He got his doctoral degree in 1997 majoring in forest planning with minors in remote sensing and economics. Varjo has served also in the University of Joensuu, European Union and the United Nations. He has wide national and international networks. At Metla he has acted as the head of International Activities, coordinator of customer funded activities as well as the head of the forest resources information service. He has been the temporary director of the Vantaa Research Unit since April 2005.
