Silva Fennica is the top-ranking general journal in forest science according to the fresh 2004 edition of the ISI Journal Citation Reports database. Among all the journals in the field of forestry, Silva Fennica's impact factor is in the 6th place.
Impact factor is an average that indicates how many times recent articles in a certain journal have been cited by articles published in other journals. ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) is an American company that collects and publishes a wide range of information on scientific literature. The ISI databases are leading tools for research information access and analysis.
Silva Fennica's high ranking is an outcome of determined efforts of the last ten years by its publishers, the Finnish Society of Forest Science and the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla). In 1994, the publishers made it their goal to turn Silva Fennica into an international journal with high prestige. The journal started publishing in English only, an international editorial board was elected and strict standards of peer review adopted. The journal gave top priority to printing high-quality contents on its pages.
Further indications of Silva Fennica's success at reaching a new status are the increased number of international submissions received, and the acceptance rate that has ranged from 30 to 40 per cent in the last three years.
Silva Fennica started a website in 1994, which makes it one of the first forest science journals on the Internet. Today, online presence is an ever more important means of reaching the target audience.
