The Management Board of the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) has nominated professor Pasi Puttonen as Research Director of Metla on 17th June 2005 for a fixed term of five years starting 1st August 2005. The position is oriented towards the ecological sustainability of forest use. The placement of this position is at the Forest House (Metsätalo), Helsinki.
The other research director position currently open at Metla is oriented towards the economical and social sustainability of forest use and will appear in the next Board meeting in August.
Both research directors will be members of the management team and will report to the Director General. Their task is to direct, control and develop the activities of research units under their supervision and they are in charge of obtaining external funding in a way that the Institute unity as a national research organisation is strengthened. In addtion, they will participate in planning, execution and development of Metla's strategy, organisation and activities.
International activity was considered the strength of Pasi Puttonen. He has worked as professor of silviculture in the University of Helsinki since 1998. Previously he has worked for the Academy of Finland and the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Research Branch. Puttonen defended his doctoral thesis in 1986 in the University of Helsinki.
