Dr Hannu Raitio nominated Director General of the Finnish Forest Research Institute
The Finnish Government has appointed Dr Hannu Raitio, Ph.D. (51) to the office of Director General of the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) starting 1st of May 2004. There were 16 applicants for the position.
Since 1976 Dr. Raitio has worked as a researcher at Metla's research station in Parkano and since 1996 as the Director of Parkano Research Station. In this position Raitio has acted effectively to develop the strategy and personnel management of the station.
Hannu Raitio received his Ph.D. from the University of Oulu in 1990. Since 1992 he has been a docent of botany at the Biology Department of the university.
Raitio has conducted wide ranging research in the general field of forest ecology. He has developed the monitoring of forest health and studied the nutrition of trees as well as the effects of air pollutants on tree growth. Raitio has a wide experience of national and international research collaboration and administration.
The task of the Director General is to lead, control and develop the operations and activities of the Institute and is responsible for the attainment of objectives and goals set for the Institute.
