Tree Breeding, Genomics and Evolutionary Biology:
New synergies to tackle the impact of climate change in the 21st century

Final Conference and Workshops of Noveltree Project 16th-18th October 2012, Helsinki and Vantaa, Finland

The challenges facing forest geneticists and tree breeders include recognition of changing demands on forests for a wider range of high value forest products and sustainability of forest ecosystems under climate change. NovelTree is an EC funded project designed to better understand the biology of forest tree species and to propose new strategic breeding options thanks to integration of the most recent knowledge on genomic information. At the end of the project, the NovelTree consortium invite scientists in forest or plant biology, tree breeders, all customers of the tree breeding production and the Forest Based Sector to discuss the new findings on forest tree biology and the future trends of forest tree breeding in three different events:

  • A two-days scientific Conference on Tree Breeding, Genomics and Evolutionary Biology organized on 16-17 October 2012 at Helsinki, Finland, House of Science and Letters, Kirkkokatu 6. This Conference will provide a platform for scientific discussions of the most recent findings obtained within and outside NovelTree project thanks to invided speaker lectures, a selection of oral presentations and a poster session. Click here for more information.
  • Workshop 1 "Genome analysis tools applied to forest tree breeding" organized on 18 October 2012 at METLA, Jokiniemenkuja 1, Vantaa. The event is addressed to researchers and students interested in understanding how to generate sequences and interpret the obtained data in order to detect genome-wide genetic variation to be used in breeding strategies. Click here for more information.
  • Workshop 2 "Realized gains and future prospects in tree breeding and seed deployment" organized on 18 October 2012 at Helsinki, Finland, House of Science and Letters, Kirkkokatu 6. Establishing and facilitating a permanent dialogue with the Forest based sector belongs to the priorities of the NovelTree project. The workshop will illustrate to non-specialists the most recent scientific findings related to new developments in tree breeding activities. Emphasis will be put on discussion of environmental  and economic issues related to development and use of improved forest material.Click here for more information.

Finland is acknowledged worldwide as a conference destination and its capital has an outstanding reputation as meeting venue. Helsinki is easily accessible, well connected and offers unique cultural, social and historical attractions.
