Brief description of the technical session

Forest sector in Russia has been recovering from the collapse after the breakdown of Soviet Union, although harvesting and production levels are still behind those pre 1992. New forest code has been under preparation for several years and was finally approved by the State Duma in early November 2006 and has entered into force 1.1.2007. This was important step, but there are still many challenges ahead, related for example to development of national forest policy and national forest programme, responsibilities of the federal power and the regions, role of public and private sector, role of domestic and foreign operators, responsibility of forest management, education and research needs and international strategy. These issues have been and are challenging topics also for research.

Aim of this technical session is to present and to discuss analysis of the recent development in Russian forest sector, approaches used, about prospects and possible recommendations.
