Cut-to-length method in harvesting is becoming more and more popular all over the world. Thinnings are an important application area of the cut-to-length method with close relationship with silviculture and forest management. Economics of early thinnings are complex issues: The small size of the timber and low yield cause high operational costs. Thinnings, however, give higher value growth in the stand and better quality of timber. To optimise thinning regimes and use of appropriate harvesting technology, both silvicultural and technological expertise is needed. For instance, timing of thinnings strongly influence harvesting costs and future development of the stands.

Improving the economics of early thinnings is quite a challenge, let's meet it in Joensuu!

The seminar is aimed for all researchers and practitioners of forestry. Topics of the seminar will include:

  • New harvesting technologies to reduce of costs
  • Alternative stand management strategies
  • Use of wood from thinnings
  • Improved work methods and systems

Call for papers, dead-line extended!

If you are interested in presenting a paper or a poster at the seminar you are still welcome to submit a one-page abstract before February 15th, 2003. An international Programme Committee will evaluate all abstracts and send the answers before February 31st, 2003. Please submit abstracts by e-mail to Ms. Mari Pitkänen: mari.pitkanen@metla.fi
