Research in Rovaniemi

The Rovaniemi Unit specialises in research on forests and forest ecosystems in the north. Special emphasis is placed on their material and non-material values in order to promote the integration of different forms of forest use. The main research topics are:

Development, management and utilisation of forest ecosystems

The management and utilisation of forest ecosystems is being studied using mathematical models depicting their development. The aim is to generate new models based on both statistical and ecophysiological approaches. The main emphasis in forest regeneration research is on the site requirements of different tree species, and on investigating the large number of ecological factors affecting the initial development of seedlings. Research on forest production processes is centred on modelling the effects of silvicultural methods, and especially the growth of peatland stands following drainage.

Susceptibility of forest ecosystems to disturbances and change

Research on the susceptibility of forest ecosystems in the north to disturbances and changes covers both abiotic and biotic natural forms of damage. The research also includes the effects of toxic compounds derived from human activities on forest ecosystems, as well as the possible effects of climate change. The station is actively participating in EU-funded research programs on the functioning of forest ecosystems.

Different forms of forest use and their integration

Research on the different forms of forest use and their integration places special emphasis on ecotourism and reindeer husbandry. The material and non-material values of the forests, and their ecologically, economically and socially sustainable use are important aspects. Tourism is, after the forest industries, the most important forest-based business sector and source of employment in Lapland. Tourism research produces information about the effects and significance of tourism, and models for the future development of sustainable tourism. The speciality of Lapland, reindeer husbandry, is being studied as an ecologically sustainable livelihood and an essential part of the local culture.

The Rovaniemi Research Unit's most important clients are the practical forestry organisations and business sector in Lapland, and the scientific community in Finland as a whole. Research co-operation is carried out with other Nordic research organisations and universities. International co-operation has been established with research institutes in the EU, and the forest research units in the circumpolar regions of Canada, the USA and neighbouring parts of Russia.
