PURO Research Consortium is funded by the Foundation for Natural Resources in Finland

PURO aims at developing an integrated framework for the analysis and management of the wood production and conversion chain. Special emphasis is on customer and product oriented optimisation of wood processing.

Our objectives are

  1. To develop an interactive, modular knowledge base of simulation models and data in the key areas of the production and conversion chain ,
  2. To increase our basic understanding of processes, and
  3. To investigate some selected research questions. See Case studies.

The system should be applicable to both medium-term and long-term analysis. A key motivation for the development of the integrated system is to make the most recent advances in wood material science available to forest managers and decision makers.

1.

2.

3. Case studies

An integrated effort is made to complete some selected case studies utilising the research in this consortium, and involving all partners. We will focus on the following two questions:

  1. What kind of thinning strategies give the best economic revenue for Scots pine, assuming the main usage as sawn timber? What pricing mechanisms in the roundwood market provide the financial basis for the forest owner to produce quality timber?
  2. For growing Norway spruce, does optimal forest management depend on whether the goal is chemical or mechanical wood conversion? Is one of these methods overall more cost-effective than the other? How does this balance depend on the relative prices of sawlogs and pulpwood?

The results of these case studies will be reported in joint papers to the scientific community and to the potential users of the model system (Task 6).
