G. Professional experience outside Finland

H. Special Features of my research

In earlier part of my career I devoted my efforts to develop forestry statistics systems. I did pioneer in analyzing forest research policies in Finland in the 1970s. Later on I analyzed historical evolution of forest policies in Finland and co-edited a comparative study of forest policies in Finland and five other countries or regions. This book initiated a new forestry law of 1997 in Finland. I have been among the pioneers in global quantitative macro modeling of underlying causes and scenarios of tropical deforestation since 1984. It has become my most devoted field of research. Since 1986 I have been leading three international research teams and networks with about 200 researchers world-wide. In 1996-2001 I created a global alliance of eight research institutions from five continents to study world forests, society and environment. This became a premier in research on the rapid globalization of forest sector.

I. Teaching experience

1961 - 1962 I got training for a half a year in teaching forestry for forest rangers in a College of Forestry at Kuru in Finland.
Since 1973 I have given lectures part-time at the University of Helsinki as an Adjunct Professor.
1976 - 1978 I gave lectures full-time at the Agricultural University of Denmark as a Professor.
Since 1994 I have given lectures part-time in English at the University of Joensuu, Finland as an Adjunct Professor.
Since 2002 I have given lectures part-time at CATIE in Costa Rica as an Affiliate Professor.
Since 2003 I have lectured full time International Forest Policies at the Department of Forest Sciences, Seoul National University, Republic of Korea.

During of my whole professional career I have given some few hundred papers in conferences, seminars and workshops: for example

  • in 2003 nineteen such papers in Canada, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Republic of Korea, Sweden and Switzerland;
  • in 2002 twenty papers in The Republic of Korea, Belgium, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, The Philippines, Sweden;
  • in 2001 fifteen papers at EU in Belgium, Brunei, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Finland, Germany, Latvia; 1991 e. g. papers in The Republic of Korea and Japan.
