Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine wheter there are any differences in the amount of roots, anatomical structure and nutrient contents of the affected and non-affected trees growing in the same area. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the relationship between these root characterics and the degree of growth disturbance found in the aboveground parts of the trees and the amounts of different nutrients in the soil.

Summary: The literature review describes the different factors which can produce deficiencies of such micro-nutrients as boron, copper, manganese, molybdenum, iron and zinc and their deficiency symptoms in forest trees. The information presented in the review is based on the wide and comprehensive review of micro-nutrient nutrition of forest trees and deficiency symptoms in individual tree species carried out by Earl L. Stone -"Microelement nutrition of forest trees" (1968).- and on publications which subsequently appeared on this subject up until 1978. Deficiency symptoms specific for coniferous and deciduous trees have been treated separately in those cases where information is available. The relationship between diebacks observed on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is discussed at the end of the review. The cause of diebacks appears, judging by its syndrome, to be a lack of boron, which is also supported by the results of the needle analyses from diordered trees. The final solution to the question -is boron the only cause of such diebacks- may be obtained from experiments into the prevention of these growth disorders, eg. by means of micro-nutrient and wood-ash fertilization.

Abstract: The paper considers micronutrient deficiencies (B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn), their physiological and biochemical (metabolical) background and possible ways of interpreting the role of micronutrient deficiencies in the growth disturbances of forest trees. Some results of preliminary biochemical tests on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from growth disturbance areas are presented and discussed.
