Current post: Director of the Joensuu Research Centre / Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla)

  • Studies on forestry at the University of Helsinki, Finland (1970- 1974) and at the University of Freiburg i.Br., Germany (1977-1978), Doctor of Forestry in 1980 (University of Helsinki, specialised in silviculture)

  • Since 1974 employed by the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) as researcher (1974-1980) and Director of Research Centre in Joensuu since 1980 (vacant between 1989-1998) and on wards , (vacant for 1989- 1995 as Professor and Research Director of Metla in Helsinki and vacant for 1996-1998 as Councellor for Forestry, Environment and Science at the Finnish Embassy in Germany, Bonn)

  • Memberships in national/international committees: Member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences, Research Council for Agriculture and Forestry 1986-1988, Council for Agricultural Research in Finland, member 1990-1993, Interim Board, European Forest Institute, member 1993, Committee for Science and Technology between Finland and Russia, member 1990-1993,  Alfred Toepfer Stiftung, Wilhelm-Leopold-Pfeil-Preis Kuratorium, Hamburg, Germany, member 1999 -2007, Chairman of the Finnish  National Working Group for Development of the Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forestry 2003-2007,  Chairman of the Finnish Forest Certification Council since 1999- 2007, Expert in the EU DG Environment Biodiversity Strategy and Biodiversity Action Plan 2010 implementation work SEBI 2010 Working groups 2005-2008.

  • Major international experiencies: Chairman for the Preparation of Resolutions S 4 and H 3 and for the European Scientific Advisory Group of the Helsinki criteria for the Ministerial Conferences for the Protection of Forests in Europe, Strassbourg 1990 and Helsinki 1993, Chairman of the EU/ COST Action E4 (Forest Reserve Research Network in Europe) 1996-1999, Vicechairman of the COST Action E 27 (Protected Forest Areas in Europe) 2002-2006,  and the Finnish Delegate for EU/COST Technical Committee since 2000- , Invited expert for the Preparatory Group on Classification of Protected Forest Areas of the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forest in Europe (MCPFE), Liaison Unit, Vienna, Austria, 1998-2003 , Expert and coordinating lead author for the report”  State of Europe’s Forest 2007” for MCPFE in Warsaw 2007. Finnish delegate for International Conference on the Contribution of Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management (CICI 2003) in Guatemala City and in Philippines, Cebu City 2004, Bialowieza 2006 and Joensuu, Finland 2008. Short term consultancy works in silviculture and forest sector development in 1980-2000 in Brazil, Argentina, China, Tanzania, Russia and Azores (Portugal).
