National forest inventory

Since 1921, Metla has been resbonsible for carrying out the national forest inventory. The 10th inventory in now going on. The national forest inventory assesses the timber resources, forest growth, forest health and biological diversity of the forests. The long inventory series makes it possible to identify long-term changes in the forests.

Metla compiles most of the official forests statistics of Finland. The Statistical Yearbook of Finland is published anually.

Timber production potentials and MELA-systems

Metla analyses regional and national timber production potentials on the basis od the data from the Finnish National Inventory and research-based assumptions of forest growth, economic aspects and resulting forest management possibilities in the future. The analysis tool developed by Metla - MELA software - in widely used also for forest management planning on enterprice and forest holding levels with respective stand data and forest level goals.

Expertise in Russian Forestry - Information Service for Russian Forestry

Information service for Russian forestry "Expertise in Russian Forestry" produces information about forestry and wood procurement in northwest Russia in easily accessible forms. Project offers information services through two information service
points. In addition to this, project maintains an Internet service for Russian forestry including i.a. information about forestry and wood trade, on-line news service, photo library and meeting point for Finnish and Russian enterprises. Project also publishes a number of publications related to Russian forestry.
