Pallasjärvi and Sätkenä

Pallasjärvi research forest

The Pallasjärvi Research Forest covers the Lake Pallasjärvi and Sätkenä areas. The Lake Pallasjärvi area is in the immediate vicinity of the Pallas-Ounastunturi National Park, near the Sätkenä-Levi tourist centre. The habitat types in the area range from open marshes and lakeside landscapes to fells covered by boreal coniferous forests. The northernmost silver birch stand in Finland is found at Sätkenä.

The Pallasjärvi Research Forest is involved both in the Pan-European Forest Condition Monitoring Programme as a part of the International Co-operative Programme on the Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests, and in the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP). The ongoing long-term research projects in the research area focus on the flowering and seed crops of trees, small mammals and forest tree breeding.

The Lake Pallasjärvi and Sätkenä areas are suitable for berry and mushroom picking, and the fish stock of Lake Pallasjärvi is widely known.
