Total information available in the Paljakka ESB is more than the number of collected samples, since e.g. litter material can be sorted into several sub-components, such as seeds, flowers, cones, needles, leaves, bark and insect remains. This is also affecting the number of samples stored in the specimen bank, and in fact, total amount of individual samples in the Paljakka ESB is estimated to exceed 300 000 due to further evaluation of the specimen and dividing the litter material into sub-components. In addition, the number of stored specimen and specimen diversity is continuously increasing by new sample material transferred into the Paljakka ESB (e.g. fungus material and conifer needles).
FUTURE PROSPECTS FOR THE PALJAKKA ESB
- Continue sample evaluation and build detailed specimen database
- Connect the database in different data processing systems
- Centralize all the information of stored sample material
- Develop operations model for storage of environmental samples in Finland
