The Kivalo experimental area was established on January 1, 1924 along the Kemijoki river. It fell within the authority of the forest administration and came under Metla’s management on January 1, 1930. Hence it is one of the oldest research areas in Finland. For centuries, people have been interested in the area in other respects as well.
