Research units

Metla is Europe ’s largest expert organisation in forest research. Metla is a public-sector research institute, subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, with approximately 700 employees. A strong network of regional research units enables Metla to serve its customers throughout the country.

Joensuu: regional development of forest and wood expertise in Eastern Finland and international, especially Russian, forestry. The number of permanent staff is 79.

Kannus: energy from forests, coastal forests, and forest planning. The number of permanent staff is 24.

Kolari: sustainable management and use of the northern timberline forests, and integration of different uses of the natural environment. The number of permanent staff is 17.
 
Muhos: ecology of forest regeneration and changes in the forest environment. The number of permanent staff is 42.

Parkano: forest health conditions and peatland forestry. The number of permanent staff is 36.

Punkaharju: forest research genetics and practical forest tree breeding. The number of permanent staff is 30.

Rovaniemi: forest management methods applicable in the northern zone, integration of the different forms of forest use. The number of permanent staff is 69.

Suonenjoki: cultivated forests from seed to tending of seedling stands. The number of permanent staff is 46.

Vantaa: ecologically, socially and economically sustainable forest use. The number of permanent staff is 241.
