Events

In 2008, Metla and its collaboration partners organised dozens of events, seminars and meetings. The list below contains just a few examples of these:

23 April 2008 Metsäsuunnittelu verkossa ja verkostoissa (Forest planning online and in networks) (Vantaa)
Services and products aimed at various forest planning tasks and stages developed at Metla were presented at a seminar organised in Vantaa in April within the Research and Development Programme on Forest Resource Info rmation Systems and Forest Planning (MSU). In addition to the seminar presentations, there was a discussion on the market situation of forest planning products and services in Finland.

24 April 2008 Voiko metsänhoidossa säästää laadusta tinkimättä? (Is it possible to reduce costs in forest management without compromising quality?) ( Kuopio )
The seminar was organised by the Forestry Centre of North Savo and the Suonenjoki research unit of the Finnish Forest Research Institute. The results of the research on early cleaning of young spruce stands, which was carried out in summer 2007, were presented at the event held in Kuopio in the spring. The objective of the seminar was to provide information about the condition of young stands, the correct timing of early cleaning and tending of seedling stands, and the economy of silvicultural tasks.

28.–31.5.2008 Forest Recreation & Tourism Serving Urbanised Societies (Hämeenlinna)

The theme of this international researcher meeting, held in Hämeenlinna on 28–31 May, was ‘forest recreation and tourism serving urbanised societies’. The meeting, which was jointly organised by the EU-funded collaboration network Cost Action E33, Forest Recreation and Nature Tourism, and the European Forum on Urban Forestry (EFUF), gathered together 180 researchers from 30 different countries. The Finnish Forest Research Institute and Metsähallitus together with the Cities of Helsinki, Espoo , Vantaa and Hämeenlinna were responsible for the practical organisation of the event. The ecologically and socially sustainable planning and implementation of rapidly growing nature tourism and recreational use of forests were discussed in the meeting.

10.-11.9.2008 Vegetative propagation of conifers for enhancing landscaping and tree breeding (Punkaharju)
In September, researchers, tree breeders, plant producers and nursery representatives from six different countries shared experiences in the possibilities and challenges of vegetative propagation of conifers in the Nordic and Baltic countries. Organised by the Punkaharju research unit of the Finnish Forest Research Institute, the meeting dealt with the framework of tree cultivation and landscaping, technical issues, such as grafting methods and rooted cuttings, as well as the outlook and collaboration of the industry.

6 October 2008 Metsätalouden tulevaisuus seminar (The future of forestry) (Kannus )
The future threats caused by the changes in forestry were discussed at the Kannus research unit of the Finnish Forest Research Institute in October. At the event, addresses were given by Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sirkka-Liisa Anttila and Antti Sahi, Forest Director of the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK). During the day, the topics of discussion included the future threats of forestry, such as the uncertainty in the timber market, the winding down of the forest industry, global warming, lack of skilled manpower, and fragmentation of forests.

15–16 October 2008 Risto Sarvas 100-vuotisjuhlaseminaari (Risto Sarvas 100th anniversary seminar) (Punkaharju)
Risto Sarvas, long-standing professor of forest management at the Finnish Forest Research Institute, was also director of the institute for a number of years. In his research activities, Professor Sarvas focused on selection cutting and seed crops of forest trees and, especially towards the end of his career, on the annual growth cycle and acclimatisation of trees. In honour of the 100th anniversary of Professor Sarvas’s birthday, the Punkaharju research unit of the Finnish Forest Research Institute organised a seminar in the premises of the Forest Museum Lusto where Professor Sarvas’ extensive life’s work and his impact on current forest research were presented.

13 November 2008 Closing seminar of the research programme ‘Potentials for the utilisation of roundwood and wood raw materials in relation to the wood product markets’ ( Lahti )
The key research results of the six-year research programme were presented and the future outlook was discussed at the closing seminar of the Finnish Forest Research Institute’s research programme ‘Potentials for the utilisation of roundwood and wood raw materials in relation to the wood product markets’ (PKM) in Lahti. The quality of wood, product possibilities, roundwood trade, and the wood product market were also debated at the seminar. In addition to Metla’s own experts, commentaries were given, for example, by representatives of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation and the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK).
