Metla’s laboratories

High-standard laboratory operations are a basic requirement for producing new information in the various sectors of forest research. Laboratory operations play a particularly important role in various research areas of forest ecology and also in the research of biosciences and wood science.

Metla’s laboratory operations consist of the central laboratory, located in the Vantaa research unit, so-called section-specific laboratories, and research unit laboratories. The purpose of laboratory operations is to serve Metla’s research projects, but analysis services are also offered to outside customers where possible.

Metla’s photo archive

At the end of 2008, Metla’s photo archive contained more than 50,000 photographs. The oldest ones date back to the early 1900s and were taken by the researchers of those days. The photographs make it easier to perceive the development and changes that have occurred in Finnish forests and forest research. They also help to understand the different phenomena of forest nature and the realisation and results of forest research.

Research forests

The country-wide network of research forests currently consists of some 30,000 hectares of land and water areas embracing different vegetation and climatic zones. Visitors to the research forests can learn about forest research and its results, various tree species, and the forest environment. Nature trails and introductions to the experiments provide an opportunity to widen one’s knowledge of forests and interest in nature.

For decades, the research forests were administered and managed by Metla, but from the beginning of 2008 the administration of these areas was transferred to Metsähallitus, although Metla is still providing guidance on the work performed.
