The role of the Working Papers among the family of publications is to serve as an outlet for preliminary research findings and for papers presented at conferences and other meetings. The series is not peer-reviewed. The publications in the series are usually in Finnish or English. As a rule, they are published in electronic format on the Internet only.

Silva Fennica is a peer-reviewed international journal of forest science. It covers all aspects of forest research, ranging from basic to applied subjects. The journal carries original research articles, review articles, research notes, discussion papers, book reviews and information on forthcoming events. More extensive research articles or reviews are published intermittently in Silva Fennica Monographs. The journal is published by the Finnish Forest Research Institute and the Finnish Society of Forest Science. Silva Fennica is published in English.

Metsätieteen aikakauskirja is a Finnish scientific journal where original research articles, reviews and communications are published in Finnish and Swedish. Its section called Metsävarat (forest resources) contains results and development calculations on national forest inventories. Other articles relating to forests, forestry and forest nature can also be published in the Science News Forum columns. Metsätieteen aikakauskirja is published jointly by the Finnish Forest Research Institute and the Finnish Society of Forest Science.

The Finnish Forest Sector Economic Outlook is a versatile information package on the current situation of the Finnish forest industry and silviculture, also providing forecasts of the coming year. It is published at the end of October or early November each year.
The Economic Outlook has been published since 1991. The English-language version has been published since 1998.

The Finnish Statistical Yearbook of Forestry is an annual comprehensive review of statistics of Finnish forestry and forest resources. In 2008, the contents of the yearbook were updated by adding an energy-related main chapter. The yearbook contains about 250 tables and 90 figures in a total of over 450 pages. The book is written in Finnish, but it is also convenient for international use because the captions of tables and figures are also in English, and the summary is in English and Swedish. The print volume is 1,400 copies.

In 2008, Metla published a Finnish-language customer magazine called Metsäntutkimus ( Forest research), the English-language interest group magazine Metla Bulletin, and Taimi-uutiset (Seedling news) in co-operation with several key operators in the seedling business, aimed at the professionals in seedling production. In 2008, Metsäntutkimus published four issues with an edition of 8,000 copies. Taimi-uutiset was also published four times with an edition of 450 copies.

The Metla website contains introductions to Metla’s research and services and provides information packages on different topics relating to forests. The pages provide information on research forests, and all Metla’s electronic publications can be downloaded.
In 2008, the Metla website had visitors from 656,893 different network addresses. The traffic load on Metla’s website increased to 754 gigabytes
The Metinfo Forest Info rmation Services provide up-to-date forest statistics, information on forests and their condition, and answers to questions about forest management and forest use. Some of the Metinfo services are subject to a charge.

In 2008 Metla published 147 media releases. Of these, 33% ( 48 in total) were on forestry statistics. News releases on publications, research results and forestry forecasts represented 59% (76 releases) of the total. Media releases concerning the Metla organisation amounted to 15% (23 releases).
In 2008 Metla published 17 newsletters. The newsletters provide information about topical issues and backgrounds in forest research. Newsletters are published by all eight research programmes.
