Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products (6.8)

Figure 6.8a. Total real value of exports and exports
of forest industry products, 1970–2010.

Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products gives an idea of the contribution of the forest industry to the national economy. It is also an indication of the degree of domestic origin of wood as raw material and of the forest industry products. Foreign trade with wood-based products is important for the Finnish economy because one fifth of the total value of Finnish exports of goods comes from them. The value of wood-based goods imported to Finland is low, only 4% of the total value of imports of goods.

In 2010 the total value of the export income of the forest industry was EUR 10.8 billion, of which 80% was from products of the pulp and paper industries, 19% from the wood-products industries, and 1% from the export of roundwood. The total value of the imported wood and forest industry products in 2010 was EUR 2 billion, of which 42% was from products of the pulp and paper industry, 32% from the wood products industries, and 26% from the import of roundwood. In 2010, 12.2 million cubic metres of roundwood was imported to Finland. This figure was one third higher than in the previous year, but still one fourth lower than average value during the preceding 10-year period.
