The research topics of the Kolari Unit are primarily related to

  • Forest biodiversity
  • Timberline forests
  • Consolidation of land use

The most important research topics are

  • forest fire history, landscape ecology, forest management practices supporting biological diversity
  • ecology and management of timberline forests , use and conservation of timberline forests, the effects of climate change on timeberline forests, dendrochronological research
  • nature tourism, conflict management in northern forets, social sustainability of land use.

In addtion, the staff participates in studies on tree species and forest genetics by attending to the long term field experiments located in Northern Finland and committing laboratory analyses related to them.

The laboratory of the research unit is well equipped for eco-physiological studies and roentgen-studies on seeds. The research community participates in domestic and nordic research networks.
