The Kannus Unit focuses on research topics associated with its location in the Ostrobothnia area: wood energy, forest management planning, coastal forests, afforestation of agricultural land and the utilisation of peatland forests.

The research unit is a recognised research and expert organisation carrying out high standard regional, national and international research. It works in close co-operation with Metla's other units, universities, research institutes and forestry and environmental organisations.
