Figure 87. Autumnal mots (Oporinia autumnata) caused a major eco- catastrophe in the late 1960s by eating the foliage of mountain birch midway through the growing season. Ca. 500 000 ha of mountain birch in Fennoscandia suffered damage of varying degree. The photo was taken in 1970 on the shore of Shirra lake, Utsjoki, in northernmost Finland, looking west.
