Demand and Supply of Forest Products in Austria

Schwarzbauer, Peter

The paper presents econometric demand and supply estimations as well as projections for wood products until 2020 in Austria. Additionally, projections are made for forest resources and removals. A consistency analysis is undertaken to compare derived removals based on the production of forest products as well as trade of roundwood and other fibers. While the exogenous assumptions on economic growth are compatible with the ECE secretariat's assumptions for ETTS V (status: early 1995), there are some general deviations from the secretariat's approach:

1) The projections of supply and demand are based on functions estimated by the author. However, the structure if these functions (import demand, domestic demand from domestic production, export supply) is compatible with the secretariat's.

2) Roundwood net-trade has not been held constant over time, but is handled in a way reflecting the increasing importance of roundwood imports for Austria. The same holds for waste paper and pulp net-trade.

3) Plywood is deleted from the consistency analysis, because it is entirely made of sawnwood (laminated sawnwood panels) in the Austrian case. Sawnwood required for this type of plywood is already included in sawnwood consumption.

4) Other industrial roundwood is seen as 'logs' rather than 'smallwood' in the consistency analysis.
