Forestry Research in the UK

Bradley, Roger T.

In contrast to the centralized and well organized forestry research sectors in many new-world countries, forestry research in the UK is undertaken by a disparate collection of research organizations and commissioned by a wide range of sponsoring bodies. The Forestry Research Coordinating Committee was established in 1988 to bring together those organizations sponsoring forestry research in order to rationalize the commissioning and prioritization process. This paper describes the problems and successes over the last decade and the implications of the recent review of Government research organizations for the future of forestry research in the UK.

Keywords: forestry research, coordination, policy.
