New Aspects of the Technology of Reforestation in Air-Polluted Areas in North-Western Bohemia

Neruda, Jindrich

Brief history and characteristics of the present state of damage to forests by industrial air pollution in the Czech Republic are given. Methods of regeneration in the most heavily air-polluted region of Bohemia, in the Krusne hory Mts (Erzgebirge). Characteristics of main activities hitherto carried out in regenerating the Krusne hory Mts. A two-stage method of forest regeneration is typical of the region: (1) establishing the stands of substitute tree species (birch, mountain ash, blue spruce, etc.), description of technical and technological procedures, and (2) reconstruction of the stands of substitute species and their conversion to stands composed of original commercial species (Norway spruce, beech, maple, larch, etc.). These reconstructions appear to be a very difficult and non-traditional task for forestry which will be accomplished on an area of thousands of hectares of forest land in future decades. Information is also given on intentions and silvicultural measures and differentiated proposals are presented on the use of machines and their technological application in particular operations in the reconstruction of stands (variants in the method of felling substitute tree species, soil and site preparation, planting of commercial species, protection of young forest plantations, etc.). Results of some research and operation measures are also given.

Key words: reforestation, air-pollution, Czech Republic.
