Scientist Assistance Programme (SAP)

The Congress organisers attach great importance to a strong scientific representation from the different regions of the world. As the shortage of funds impedes the participation of many scientists, SAP has arranged to help some 220 participants from developing and other disadvantaged countries with an evident need for assistance covering fully or partially the costs of travel, registration, board and lodging.

In addition to the participation in the Congress, SAP will offer two pre-Congress workshops of one week each. The subjects are Forest Research Planning and Management, and Dryland Forestry Research. Furthermore, a limited number of participants not attending the workshops will have an opportunity to take part in one of the Post-Congress Excursions in Finland.

Application forms with relevant instructions were distributed in April 1994. More than 300 researchers applied for assistance. The selection process, based on the criteria approved by the IUFRO Executive Board, was completed in November.

Financing will be provided mainly by the Finnish International Development Agency (FINNIDA) but also by several foreign sponsors. The Congress organisers hope that more financial assistance will be found from other sources. For instance, a number of aid agencies have indicated their willingness to support the attendance of individuals involved in their projects.
