Medical Care The medical care in Finland is of a high standard and there are several hospitals in Tampere, e.g. the University Hospital. The addresses and telephone numbers of hospitals, health and dental clinics are available at the Congress Information Desk.
CLIMATE In early to mid August, the temperatures in Tampere range from the average midday temperature of 20 degrees Celsius to the average night time temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. Occasional showers can be expected. On the opening day of the Congress, 7 August, the sun will rise in Tampere at 05:18 and set at 21:43.
CLOTHING There is no dress code for the Congress. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as the Welcome Reception and the Farewell Party are festive events but no formal dress is required. The organisers suggest that you bring along a warm sweater for chilly evenings and an umbrella or a raincoat. For tours and excursions walking shoes or rubber boots are recommended.
MONEY The Finnish monetary unit is the Finnmark (FIM) markka, divided into 100 pennies. On May 22nd, 1995, USD 1 was equivalent to about FIM 4.42. You can check for the current exchange rate from Kurt Swanson's currency converter at Lund or from Koblas Currency Converter at GNN. Major credit cards are accepted in most shops and restaurants.
TIME The summer time in Finland is 3 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
ELECTRICITY The electric current is 220-240 V, 50 Hz alternating current (AC). Two-pin round plugs are standard.
Food
In August, salmon, whitefish and Baltic herring as well as mushrooms and
game are very popular, and it is the season for crayfish. Wild cloudberries,
blueberries and lingonberries are often served for dessert.
Beverages
In Finland tap water is safe to drink. Wines and spirits are sold by
state-owned ALKO shops.
TIPPING Tipping is not customary in Finland. Service charges are included in the prices.
LOCAL TRANSPORTATION Tampere has excellent public transport services. Most of the Congress hotels are within walking distance from the Congress Venue.
