Purpose:
1. Introduction of the FAO Programme on Environmentally Sound Forest Harvesting and presentation of the FAO Model Code of Forest Practices .
2. Individually report on codes of forest practice which have been implemented in each participant's country, state, or organization and provide written summaries of the details of such codes.
3. Report on individual experience in the development or implementation of improved forest harvesting practices, especially cost and efficiency studies.
4. Share experiences on low impact harvesting systems and on the promotion of people's participation.
5. Attendance of an excursion on environmentally sound harvesting under full mechanization.
Attendance:
The meeting is intended for specialists in forest operations and technology with a specific interest in "environmentally sound" or low impact forest harvesting systems. Since acceptance is limited to 50 participants a selection may have to be made from among potential participants. Direct experience in development, implementation or assessment of codes of forest practice would be an advantage. Experience in developing countries will also be considered an asset.
PLEASE NOTE that funding to support travel, board, and lodging in connection with this meeting is NOT available from FAO. We will be happy to write letters of support on behalf of applicants seeking funds to attend the meeting but we cannot provide financial assistance directly.
