Excursion Route and Description of Program

Saturday, August 12

15:00 Departure from Tampere Hall to Korkeakoski by bus. Modern sawmill in Korkeakoski or Vilppula. Energy production from sawmill waste by mobile crasher technology. Field research station of the University of Helsinki in Hyytiälä. Icebreaker and entertainment with excursion number 5.

Sunday, August 13

09:00 Departure from Orivesi to Hyytiälä. Academic Forestry Education in Finland. College level education of forestry in Finland. The foundations of new forest machine technology. Demonstration of a walking forest machine. Travel distance during the day by bus 80 km.

Monday, August 14

07:30 Departure from Jämsä to Jämsänkoski. The vocational training of forest workers, forest machine operators and forest machine mechanics. Jämsänkoski Forest Machine School. Harvesting technology and methods of self employed forest owners. Modern shortwood harvesting of the United Paper Mills pulp and paper company. Truck transportation of wood. Contemporary wood measurement methods in wood procurement. Wood handling at the pulp mill. World's largest and fastest paper machine in Kaipola.

Architecture exhibition in Alvar Aalto museum in Jyväskylä. Sight seeing tour in Jyväskylä.

Tuesday, August 15

07:30 Departure from Jyväskylä to Keitele and Äänekoski.

Connecting truck transportation and floating of wood. The floating of wood in bundle rafts.The Keitele-Päijänne channel cruise. The wood storages in water. Methods of feeding wood from water to the process. Railway transportation of wood. Wood measurement in a railway car. Äänekoski pulp mill. Energy balance of a pulp mill. Modern process water treatment at the pulp mill. Environmental aspects.

Wednesday, August 16

08:00 Departure from hotel to the FMG forest machine factory. Manufacturing of shortwood harvesting machinery. Mechanized and manual harvesting of thinnings. Multiple tree handling. Transportation of wood in barges in the Lake Saimaa area. Bioenergy use of low value wood for local heating plant.

Travel distance during the day by bus 200 km.

Accommodation: Hotel Herttua in Kerimäki. Farewell dinner.

Thursday, August 17

08:00 Departure from Kerimäki to Punkaharju.

Forest Information Center and Museum Lusto. Finnish Forest Research Institute's field station and arboretum.

Scenic route of Punkaharju. Museum ship Salama and medieval castle Olavinlinna in Savonlinna.World's largest wooden church in Kerimäki.

Travel distance during the day by bus 60 km.

The tour ends formally in Savonlinna at 18:00 o'clock.

Options for the return arrangements

Bus: The excursion bus (included in the excursion fee) will return to Helsinki where it is about 23:00 at night.

Train: There is a night train connection from Savonlinna to Helsinki where the arrival time on Friday morning is 6:30.

Flight : There is a flight connection from Savonlinna to Helsinki: Departure time 18:15, arrival in Helsinki-Vantaa airport at 19:00 for the connecting international flights.
