Congress Venues

The opening and closing ceremonies as well as the plenary sessions, sub-plenary sessions, half of the inter-divisional sessions and the poster exhibition will take place in Tampere Hall (T-building). Also the registration and service desks, the message centre and the service centre for Scientist Assistance Programme are found in the same building.

The University buildings, across the street, will accommodate another half of the inter-divisional sessions as well as most of the divisional and congress group sessions. You will find a detailed map showing the location of each activity in your Congress Pack handed out to you at the Registration in Tampere. There will also be an information desk in each of the buildings used during the Congress.

Scientist Assistance Programme tähän!

Exhibits

Scientific posters will be displayed in the Exhibition Hall adjacent to the main foyer in Tampere Hall. The Opening of the Poster Session is on Tuesday, 8 August at 13:00 and the exhibition continues until Thursday, 10 August 19:00 o'clock.
The authors will be personally present in two one-hour poster sessions at 13:00-14:00 on Tuesday and on Thursday.

There will be a special IUFRO History Exhibition in the lobby of Tampere Hall.

Finnish forestry-related organisations will also provide information on their activities in the Non-Commercial Exhibition on level 0 in Tampere Hall.

Press Centre

The Congress Press Centre is located on level -1 in Tampere Hall and it is open from Sunday, 6 August until Saturday, 12 August. Only accredited journalists will be allowed to enter this area. In all matters concerning the press contact the Press Centre, phone number (931) 243 46 03, fax number (931) 243 46 02. The press officer is Ms Kirsi Norros.

Registration Hours

The registration hours are as follows:

* Monday, 7 August 1995 07:00 - 09:00, continued 12:00 - 19:00

The registration desks will serve Congress participants during the whole Congress week.

To avoid a long wait on Monday morning before the Opening Ceremonies, the organisers strongly recommend that you register on Saturday or Sunday.

Congress Pack

Each participant will receive a Congress Pack containing the name badge, the final congress programme, a list of participants, invitation cards for the ceremonies and receptions as well as other material and important information. Your personal badge is your admission ticket to all the sessions. Kindly wear your badge at all times. Your Congress Pack is available at the registration desk in the main foyer of Tampere Hall.


ACCOMPANYING PERSONS' LOUNGE

The Accompanying Persons' Lounge is located on level 1 in Tampere Hall.


BANKING

There is an office of Merita Bank of Finland with foreign exchange on level 0 in Tampere Hall. Major credit cards are accepted for cash. The Bank is open as follows:

Rates include: The special Congress "FCB" rates are effective between 15 June and 31 August 1995. To get these special rates, please call your local Hertz Reservation Office or CONGREX and mention the rate code "FCB". The car rental desk is located on level -1 in Tampere Hall.


COMPUTERS

Computers and printers are available free of charge, generally at the opening hours of the Congress buildings. There are also assistants who help is using the facilities.

The Congress Information System contains general congress information, the Congress programme with abstracts of invited papers and posters, as well as data on delegates and organisers. The information is in hypermedia form and users access it with easy-to-use computer programmes. Internal and outgoing external electronic mail as well as connections to the global World Wide Web are also available.

A special Internet Café hosts several workstations. It is located in the Exhibition Hall in T-building.


COPYING

Copying machines are available to the delegates for a fee on level 0 in Tampere Hall and in the main building of the University.


DINING

Meals are not included in the registration fee with the exception of the Welcome Reception and Farewell Party. Buffet breakfast is, however, included in all the room rates. There are several lunch and snack places in the Congress buildings and in the neighbourhood. Further information about dining in Tampere is available at the Restaurant Booking Information Desk.


FACILITIESFOR DISABLED PERSONS

All the buildings used for the Congress have facilities for disabled people. There are also facilities for persons with impaired hearing in Tampere Hall.


FIRST AID

The first aid room on level 0 in Tampere Hall is open always when the building is open. Other times contact the Information Hotline (tel. 2434 120).


INFORMATION

Information Desks
The main information desk is on level 0 of Tampere Hall. The information desk staff assists in English, French, German and Spanish. The City Tourist Office and the Restaurant Booking Service are in this area. There is also an information desk in each one of the buildings used during the Congress. The information desks are open according to the opening hours of the Congress buildings.

Daily Bulletin
A Congress Bulletin "Daily Balloon" is published in English daily to provide current information on the Congress activities to the delegates and accompanying persons. "Daily Balloon" can be collected at Information Desks and other central locations. It is also available in the World Wide Web.


LOST PROPERTY

The Lost Property desk is located on level 0 in Tampere Hall.


MAIL

The post office is located on level 0 in the U-building. Wrapping materials are sold at the post office. A special stamp collection will be issued for the Congress.

MEETING POINT

The Meeting Point is on level 0 in Tampere Hall.


MEETING ROOM ASSISTANTS

Every meeting room has a Meeting Room Assistant who helps moderators and speakers in all practical arrangements in the meeting room. Speakers should give a copy of their invited paper in full-length to the Assistant, and the moderators should give him or her the list of authors and titles of voluntary papers.


MESSAGES

For messages and correspondence to the participants during the Congress (6 August to 12 August 1995) use the address of the Congress Secretariat in Tampere.

Personal messages may be collected at the Message Centre on the entry level of Tampere Hall near the Information Desk.


PAPER TABLING AREA

The Meeting Room Assistants will bring the remaining copies of the invited and voluntary papers to the Paper Tabling Area on level -1 in the U-building. The delegates can pick up these papers subject to availability.


PHOTOGRAPHS

A photographer will take pictures of the participants and sell them in the U-building during the Congress.


PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Transit passes, valid on Tampere City buses during the Congress week, are included in your personal Congress material, received at the registration. Route maps and time-tables are available at the Travel Desk on level -1 in Tampere Hall.


RECYCLING

There will be bins for recyclable items on level 0 in Tampere Hall on Friday, 11 August and Saturday, 12 August. Please bring all unwanted recyclable items (Congress bags, books, badges, paper, used batteries etc.) to these bins before you leave Tampere.


SHOPS

There are shops in Tampere Hall and in the U-building selling postcards, newspapers, cigarettes, souvenirs, etc. International newspapers are sold in the paper shop in the U-building.


SPEAKERS' SERVICE

The Speakers' Service is on level 0 in the U-building. It gives information on the scientific programme, slide preview room and meeting room facilities such as overhead projectors and other audio-visual equipment.

The Speakers' Service is open always when the U-building is open.

The authors of invited papers should give a copy of their full-length paper to the Meeting Room Assistant where they present the paper, or bring it to Speakers' Service for the archives of the IUFRO Secretariat.

The session organisers should give a list of the authors and the titles of the voluntary papers of their sessions to the Meeting Room Assistant, or bring it to the Speakers' Service. This information will be included in the Congress Report.


TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Major credit cards can be used for phones and telefaxes in the Congress buildings. Otherwise the phones operate with coins or phone cards that can be bought at the Information desks.


TRANSLATIONS

The Congress language is English. Simultaneous translation is provided in the four official IUFRO languages, English, French, German and Spanish, during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as Plenary Sessions and those Sub-Plenary Sessions that are held in Tampere Hall. Only English is used by the speakers in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.


TRAVEL

A travel agency and Finnair, the official airline carrier of the Congress, have service desks on level -1 in Tampere Hall from Saturday, 5 August until Saturday, 12 August. The staff of the desks makes all the usual travel arrangements, including tour programmes after the Congress.
