Fires in the spruce dominated wet Vepssky forest are extremely rare events and do not spread much from the point of ignition. This sample plot #1 is an exception; the forest experienced low-intense surface fires in 1703, 1770, 1833 and 1879. The 'witnesses' are old burnt pine stumps, snags and old living pines which are currently replaced by spruces. Photo: Ekaterina Shorohova, 2006.
