Dataset and study areas
National Forest Inventory in Finland (NFI), carried out by Metla, 1920-.… Finland was the first country in Europe starting to carry out a statistically based national forest inventory. The method involves the use of satellite imagery data and digital mapping, and ground measurements.
Some of the NFI results used in RESTORE are published in:
- Reinikainen, A., Mäkipää, R., Vanha-Majamaa, I. and Hotanen, J.-P. 2001. Kasvit muuttuvassa metsäluonnossa. Summary: Changes in the frequency and abundance of forest and mire plants in Finland since 1950, Tammi, Helsinki, 384 pp.
The only large scale complex forest management and restoration experiments in Fennoscadia:
- MONTA, 1995-..., Finland
- RETREE, 1998-..., Finland
- EVO, NATURA 2000 network 2002-..., Finland
Some of the results of the experiments can be found in the following publications:

Long-term studies on dynamics of pristine European boreal forests (defined as never commercially felled) in Russia. In some of the areas the first inventories were made in the beginning of the 20th century.
