[  Suomeksi  |  Objectives  |  Project leader  |  Metla Research  ]

Duration: 2009-2011
Research project group: Long-term monitoring of forest ecosystems projects

Objectives

"Water budgets" is a demonstration project included in FutMon-project (Action D3).

The project is primarily aimed at the development and implementation of water budget modelling on intensive monitoring plots. The project will test and demonstrate the feasibility of more comprehensive soil moisture measurements.

Background

The supply of water to trees is one of the key factors affecting tree vitality and forest condition. Determination of the water budget has also proved to be of central importance in understanding a number of physiological processes such as nutrient uptake, growth and response to biotic and abiotic stress factors. Up to now, the main focus in Level II monitoring has been on the effects of air pollution on the condition and functioning of forest ecosystems, and meteorological and hydrological measurements have been carried out on a limited number of Level II plots only. Now, faced by the additional new threat of climate change, there is an urgent need to broaden and develop the existing monitoring activities on the so-called “core” plots of the Level II network.
