Duration: 2009-2011
Research project group: Long-term monitoring of forest ecosystems projects

This project aims at the selection of plots, surveys, and monitoring attributes to be used in intensive forest monitoring. In order to facilitate this, intensive monitoring will be conducted on Finland´s 18 “basic” intensive monitoring plots during 2009 and 2010 (map).
The results from Action IM1 and the three demonstration project actions (Projects 8525, 8526, 8527) will be used to select the “core” intensive monitoring plots, as well as to define existing or new monitoring attributes to be assessed on these plots in the future.
Background
The intensive monitoring under Life+ funded FutMon project is a follow-up to the monitoring activities initiated in 1995 after Finland joined the European Union. Up until 2006, forest monitoring in the member countries of the EU was based on EU regulations. Intensive forest monitoring contributes to the ICP Forest Programme, launched in 1985 under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
Methods employed
The following surveys are being carried out in accordance with the ICP Forests Manual on the 18 plots (map):
