Duration: 2009-2011
Research project group: Long-term monitoring of forest ecosystems projects

Objectives

The aim of this action is to develop and continue the extensive monitoring of forest condition. In Finland , the extensive forest condition monitoring is being carried out on ca. 850 permanent National Forest Inventory (NFI) plots (map) during 2009-2010. The main variables assessed in this monitoring activity are relative leaf and needle loss, i.e. defoliation, discolouration and the occurrence of abiotic and biotic damage.

Background

This EU/Life+ co-funded FutMon action (L2) is a continuation of the large-scale forest condition monitoring that started in Finland in 1986. Since the very start, this monitoring activity has been carried out in co-operation with the UN/ECE ICP-Forests -programme and, during 1995-2006, in accordance with EU regulations. Forest condition monitoring is carried out using internationall harmonized methods.

Methods employed

The monitoring is being carried out in accordance with the ICP Forests Manual, part II.
