Research project group: Long-term monitoring of forest ecosystems projects

Objectives

During 2009–2011 the Pan-European forest condition monitoring programme is being carried out as a part of the FutMon project, co-financed by the Life+ programme of the European Union. Twenty-three member states are participating in the project, which is being co-ordinated by Germany . The project aims at the further development of an integrated pan-European forest monitoring system, that will serve as a basis for the provision of forest-related information in the European Union. One of the primary aims of the project is to improve current methodology for monitoring the effects of e.g. climate change and air pollution on forest condition and forest ecosystem functioning.

Extensive monitoring consists of the annual monitoring of tree condition, including parameters such as the relative loss of needle and leaf biomass and occurrence of abiotic and biotic damage on a systematic monitoring network. In Finland the network consists of 850 permanent sample plots (map) of the National Forest Inventory.

Intensive monitoring studies the effects of a range of environmental and anthropgenic stress factors on the state and functioning of forest ecosystems. The intensive monitoring is carried out on 18 monitoring plots (map) located in different parts of Finland .

The objectives of the FutMon project include the development of new parameters for estimating tree vitality and adaptation, and the evaluation of factors influencing nutrient cycling and water budgets.
