Duration: 2001-2003   Keywords: Demonstration project, European-scale environmental monitoring, Forest health, Information system

Objectives

Demonstration was run at three nodes, Finland, Poland and Italy. The aim of the demonstration was to ascertain that the field equipment,
information systems and node operator procedures worked as planned.

The Finnish FOREMMS node is located in the Metla Joensuu Research Centre. In the course of the FOREMMS prototype development period,
Metla supplied information concerning boreal forest ecology. Metla also planned and executed the verification process of the various kinds of FOREMMS modules.
The aim of the verification was to ensure the correct and desired operation of all systems.

Results

In Kangasvaara study area, the L1-level ground truth measurements were first gathered in 2001 in order to calibrate the FOREMMS parameter extraction procedures.
The measurements were repeated during the demonstration period in 2002. Based on these data, the HUTSCAT and AISA L2-level images and MODIS L3-level
satellite images over the boreal zone can be interpreted with help of the FOREMMS system.

Figure 2. Scenario for distribution of nodes in the future FOREMMS systems.

The figure below illustrates a possible network of FOREMMS nodes. Each node represents 1) an intensive data collection site for field and airborne measurements, and
2) an administrative unit with an instance of the FOREMMS system. A node also includes an associated monitoring area, which includes the intensive data collection site.
One or more areas covered by high-resolution satellite images and a total associated area covered by medium-resolution satellite images. All the sub-total monitoring
regions together cover the whole Europe. Special nodes could be established, like the EEA node proposed in the figure. This node is only for retrieval of information from
all the other nodes in the network to obtain a European-level overview of Europe in total.

During the demonstration project Metla was responsible for developing the verification procedures and reporting of the functionality of the components of the FOREMMS
information system, weather station, and hardware and software modifications of the field PC Husky. Although not all elements worked in all three nodes, the overall
functionality of FOREMMS was verified.

The prototype can be run interactively from http://www2.nr.no/foremms/
