Objectives

General objective of the project is to improve and secure business opportunities and competitiveness of Finnish forestry related companies and research organizations in emerging Russian market through international research.

Specific goal is to build and apply new research methods and approaches for improving the Finnish know how on wood harvesting technology, wood energy and logistics in Northwest Russia. The project will provide know how about possibilities for further development of technology for industrial and energy wood harvesting, transportation and logistics, i.e. what could be used, what are the potentials, what are the specific requirements for technology appropriate to Russian conditions, in particular in unmanaged and deciduous stands.

Finnish companies and organizations can benefit of the results when developing business operations in Russia or adapting forest technology for Russian conditions.

Activities of the project are divided into three working packages which main themes are following:

1: Industrial wood harvesting in Northwest Russia 2: Energy wood procurement in Northwest Russia 3: Transportation and logistics in Northwest Russia

The project organisation consists of two Finnish research groups, from the Finnish Forest Research Institute and from the University of Helsinki. International partners are the Petrozavodsk State University, the St. Petersburg Forest Technical Academy and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.The project will be implemented in cooperation with John Deere Forestry, Kesla, Mantsinen Group, Metsäliitto Group, Ponsse, Sisu Auto, Stora Enso and UPM-Kymmene Forest.
