[  Suomeksi  |  Objectives  |  Project leader  |  Metla Research  ]

Duration: 2005-2006   Keywords: biodiversity, forest fires, sustainability, forestry, environmental protection

Objectives

The overall objective of this project is to apply cross-border joint research focusing on pristine forest areas in order to obtain in-depth knowledge supporting the sustainable use of forests in the Barents region and knowledge that can be applied in preventing conflicts related to the use of fragile sub-arctic northern forests. The specific purpose of the project is to provide through research knowledge applicable for FSC certification of the sub-arctic forests, for educational institutes, and for conservation of biodiversity in the forests in economical use.

In order to reach this objective, the project will

  1. create a cross-border expert network,
  2. launch the exchange of research results thus far obtained and compile a pivotal database of research knowledge related to natural northern boreal forests,
  3. describe the spatial and temporal natural development of forest structure through field studies,
  4. evaluate the quality and significance of the forces driving forest development, and
  5. use the research knowledge obtained to describe forest-treatment methods , which would better ensure the sustainability of the use of fragile northern boreal forest ecosystems.
