Research Programme: Forest Management Planning

Objectives

The project “Modification of the MELA Model to use Assimilated Initial Data to Produce Forest Growth Estimates in Boreal Forests” (LocalMELA) is a part of a Finnish-Canadian consortium “Northern Boreal Forest Information Products Based on Earth Observation Data” (3/2005-3/2008) within the research programme AVALI. LocalMELA is a co-operation project between Metla and the University of Joensuu. The project is funded by Tekes.
  • The project develops and tests together with the University of Joensuu as well as with other members of the AVALI consortium a prototype for a calculation system that is easily tailored for local conditions (forest inventory data and models).
  • The objective of the project is a new interface standard between the models and calculation chains to facilitate the adoption of the calculation system into different conditions with the help of local expertise.
