Metla Project 7082
Analysis of nutrient cycles in ecological and socio-economic systems for policy purpose - AESOPUS
Duration: 2001-2003
Objectives
The project is a part of the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources SUNARE research programme. The project is coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute. Project partners are University of Helsinki, Agrifood Research Finland, Government Institute for Economic Research and Finnish Forest Research Institute.
The aim of the project is to identify and quantify the nutrient fluxes and stocks within and between different ecological and socio-economic systems. Also the dynamic equilibria of the nutrient fluxes will be defined. The project covers Finland as a whole and administrative subregions. Also the changes in historical nutrient fluxes will be studied. Based on existing scenarios and i.a. legislative requirements potential changes in the future nutrient fluxes will be estimated. Based on the quantification of nutrient sinks and sources, nutrient ratios and imbalances will be analysed. Further, the influence of the natural processes and human influence on the nutrient fluxes will be studied. The ecological systems covered are agriculture, forests and freshwaters. The socio-economic system will be linked to ecological systems using input-output accounting and consumption functions for demand.
Finnish Forest Research Institute is responsible for the stocks and fluxes associated with forests, peatlands and forestry.
