Objectives
The main purpose of this project is to edit a report of the criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management in Finland in 2000.
The principles for the sustainable forestry were accepted at the UN Conference on Environment and Sustainable development (Rio de Janeiro, 1992). The pan-European principles, criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, as well as the principles for sustaining the biological diversity of the European forests, were accepted by European countries and the European Union at the Helsinki Ministerial Conference (1993), and have thereafter been followed up by the so called Helsinki-process.
The six pan-European criteria and indicators of the ecological, social and economic sustainability of forestry were taken as terms for sustainable forest management in Finland. The national criteria and their development were first published in 1997 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry following a co-operation of a large number of organisations, experts and other interested parties.
Since then, knowledge about the sustainability and the applicability of the criteria in sustainable forest management has increased. In autumn 1998, the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry appointed a committee including representatives from various organisations to steer the further development of the criteria and indicators and to promote their application in forest policy and forest management.
In this project, a report (in Finnish and English) including the updated criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management in Finland will be edited according to the decisions made by the committee. The report will produce qualitative and quantitative information on the state and development of forests, forestry and forest policy in Finland.
