Duration: 1998-2001
Keywords: Larch, Larix, saw milling, surface treatment of wood, wood drying, wood gluiry, wood machining
Objectives
This collaborative research project adds to and strengthens the sources of raw materials of wood product industries for larch wood (Larix sp.). The goal is to study the suitability and potential for utilisation of larch wood for demanding uses of furniture and joinery: furniture for interior and exterior uses, structures for outside uses, places vulnerable for moisture, household and decorative objects. Special attention is paid to drying, machining, gluing, surface treatment and durability against weather. In addition, the project supports product development of the industries using larch wood. Tekes jointly finances the project with Metla, VTT Building Technology, University of Joensuu and several small and medium scale enterprises of wood product industry.
Sub-projects: 1. Preliminary storage and sawing of logs - Metla, 2. Lumber drying - VTT, University of Joensuu, 3. Gluing - VTT, 4. Surface treatment - VTT, 5. Operations required for special products - VTT, enterprises, 6. Experiences of larch users - Metla, Association of Mastercarpenters, enterprises.
